Essential Oil Properties


Basil: Refreshing and uplifting. Indigestion, sinusitis, anxiety, depression and mental fatigue, panic attacks, study aid. Avoid during pregnancy.


Bergamot: Uplifting, digestive and urinary problems, appetite regulator, cystitis, deodorant, chickenpox, stress and depression, anxiety. Skin care: oily skin.


Black pepper: Warming and stimulating. Chilblains, anaemia, stiffness, chills, colic, heartburn, constipation, flu, muscular aches, fevers.


Chamomile: Soothing and regulating. Inflamed, itchy skin conditions, healing wounds, allergies, analgesic, aids sluggish digestion, arthritis, PMS, menopausal problems. Depression and irritability, insomnia, anxiety. Skin care: sensitive, allergic skin.


Cedarwood: Composing eczema, hair care, diuretic, bronchitis, catarrh, asthma, cystitis. Skin care: Mature and oily skin.

Clary sage: Relaxing but euphoric, regulates menstrual cycle, menopausal problems, period pains, PMT, diuretic, thrush, muscle relaxant, stress and tension. Avoid if pregnant.


Cypress: Tightening, cellulite, rheumatism, heavy periods, menopause, bad circulation, nosebleeds, varicose veins, piles, highly diuretic. Skin care: open pores and broken capillaries.


Eucalyptus: Cleansing and protecting powerful antiseptic, flu, sinusitis, laryngitis, asthma, rheumatics, coughs, colds, bronchitis, reduces temperature, catarrh.


Sweet Fennel: Restorative. Wind, bloated abdomen, excessive appetite, cellulite, colic, indigestion, nausea, obesity, highly diuretic. Avoid if pregnant.


Frankincense: rejuvenating. Asthma, bronchitis, slows and deepens breath, mastitis, catarrh, healing for deep wounds. Emotional upheavals, breaks links with the past and nightmares. Skin care: rejuvenation


Geranium: Relaxing and uplifting. Poor circulation, mental and physical stress, mastitis, chilblains, shingles, menopausal difficulties, PMS. Skin care: all skin types


Ginger: Warming. Arthritis, fatigue, muscular aches, poor circulation, mental and physical stress, mastitis, chilblains, shingles, menopausal difficulties, PMS. Skin care: all skin types.


Grapefruit: Uplifting. Promotes hair growth, cellulite, pre and post exercise, water retention, depression, performance stress. Skin care: young, oily or combination skin.


Jasmine Absolute/Jasmine Dilute: exotic aphrodisiac. Lack of sexual vitality, post natal depression, calms nervous system, depression, lack of confidence, pessimism


Juniper: Cleansing. Digestive problems, cystitis, scanty periods, rheumatism, arthritis, stimulates immune system, eczema, psoriasis, detoxification, colic, coughs, dermatitis, piles, cellulite. Avoid if pregnant or with kidney stones.


Lavender: Natures own wonder product. Every first aid box in the home, office, factory, car or caravan should keep bottle of lavender. Its sweet floral aroma with balsamic-woody undertones has calming properties. It will encourage rest and sleep at the end of the days activities. For bruises and burns apply one drop directly onto the skin and repeat twice daily. For bathing add 5 drops to a spoon of carrier oil before adding to water.


Lemon: Refreshing. Highly antiseptic. Fortifies the nervous system, diuretic, stimulates the immune system, anaemia, colds, sore throats, flu, sinusitis, slimming, hand and nail care, tonic, rheumatism. Skin care: oily skin, freckles, may cause irritation to sensitive skin.


Lemon grass: Relaxing and refreshing. Athletes foot, excessive perspiration, insect repellent, (fleas, lice, mosquitoes, ticks etc), scabies, muscular pain, tissue and muscle tonic, fevers, infections, headaches, nervous exhaustion. An ideal insect repellent.


Marjoram: Deeply relaxing. Aching muscles, joints and limbs, muscular spasms, cramp, muscular strain, post sports, rheumatics, digestive oil, nervous stomach, constipation, period pain and irregular periods, sedative. Avoid if pregnant.


Myrrh: Purifying. Anti inflammatory. Bronchitis, flu, Laryngitis, catarrh, constipation, flatulence, cystitis, mouth and gum problems, piles, diuretics, ulcers, thrush, dry coughs. Avoid if pregnant.


Neroli : Comforting Depression, insomnia, anxiety. Improves skin elasticity, stretch marks, aphrodisiac, sedative, stress, bereavement, disorientation, fright and hysteria. Skin care: all skin types. For balancing combination skin types. Wrinkle prevention.


Orange: Radiance. Antispasmodic. Constipation, chronic diarrhoea, obesity, palpitations, nervous tension, insomnia, SAD, lack of energy. Caution: phototoxic.


Patchouli: Pervasive. Antiseptic, antifungal. Fevers, scars, eczema, burns, allergies, dermatitis, herpes, cracked skin, insecticide, anti inflammatory, impetigo, athlete's foot. Skin care: tired skin, dry, mature skin, open pores


Peppermint: Cooling. Hangovers, hiccoughs, asthma, migraine, headaches, nausea, halitosis, scabies, shock, ringworm, poor digestion, sunburn, mastitis. Mental fatigue, studying, stimulates memory.


Petitgrain: Calming and refreshing. Fortifies the nervous system, palpitations, excessive perspiration, deodorant, insomnia, good curing convalescence. Depression , uplifting.


Pine: Clarifying. All chest and sinus problems, including colds, flu, asthma, etc. cystitis, rheumatism, water retention, sore throat, pneumonia, arthritis, neuralgia, muscular pains. Clears the head, invigorating. Avoid during pregnancy.


Rose: Feminine wholeness. PMS, the essence for the menopause, anorexia, regulates and tones the entire female reproductive organs, allergy migraines, allergies, aphrodisiac, post natal depression, depression, stress, grief, bereavement. Skin care: dry, sensitive skin, excellent for mature skin and broken capillaries.


Rosemary: Stimulating. General tonic, rheumatism, slimming, sprains and swollen ankles, improves circulation, alopecia, hair tonic, mental fatigue, lethargy, study aid, poor memory. Avoid if pregnant, epileptic or with high blood pressure.


Sandalwood: Deepening. Cystitis, fluid retention, eczema, catarrh, coughs, sore throats, insomnia, and fatigue. Skin care: sandalwood is very gentle and preserving. Use for dry, sensitive and mature skin.


Tea tree: Supportive. Active against bacteria, fungi and viruses, antibiotic, powerful immuno-stimulant. Use for all infections. Skin care: Acne and spots. Apply 1 drop of neat essential oil to the spots with a cotton bud. Repeat daily. Tip- Put one drop of tea tree onto your toothbrush before applying paste as a prevention against gum disease


Thyme: Stimulating. Chest infections, colds, coughs, cystitis, fatigue, insomnia, aches and pains, rheumatism, digestive stimulant, antiseptic (e.g. throat problems), asthma. Mental stimulant, fatigue, anxiety, depression. Avoid during pregnancy or if suffering from high blood pressure. Can be a skin irritant.


Vetivert: Tranquillity. Arthritis, rheumatism, depression, insomnia, nervous tension. Protecting and comforting. This is bottled tranquillity!!!!! Comforting, deeply relaxing, deeply calming.


Ylang Ylang: Confidence. Slows too rapid a heart beat, regulates the nervous system, invigorating for the elderly, insomnia, sedative, relaxing. Anger, aphrodisiac, fear, panic attacks, lack of self confidence. Pro longed use or too high a dose may cause nausea.


Sensitivity test: if you intend to use an aromatherapy blend product on the skin, you may like to carry out a sensitivity test before you use an oil for the first time. A good way is to put one drop of oil in a piece of tissue and very lightly touch the skin (the underside of the forearm is a good place) leave overnight without washing the area and check if there is any redness or other sign of adverse reaction. If in doubt, do not use the oil product concerned.
