How To Use Essential Oils

A Site Dedicated To Anxiety For Sufferers And Carers

Massage: the most effective way of using Aromatherapy. When using essential oils in massage, it is very important that they be diluted first in a cold compressed carrier oil such as sweet almond, peach kernel, jojoba oil. These carrier oils are also beneficial to the skin, and will assist the absorption of the chosen essential oil. For one massage, use a teaspoon (usually about 5 ml) of carrier oil and add just 2-3 drops of the chosen essential oil.

Therapeutic baths: Most essential oils are ideally suited for use in the bath. The oil will assist you by absorption through both the skin and the nose. Add a total of up to 8 drops just before you get in, swish the water around to ensure complete dispersion, close the door and blissfully soak for at least 10 minutes.

Inhalation: Add 3-6 drops of essential oil to a steaming bowl of water, place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl allowing the water vapour to carry the oil to your nose. Remain like this, inhaling deeply, for several minutes. Alternatively, add 1-2 drops of essential oil to a handkerchief, hold to your nose and inhale. Inhalation is ideal for sinus and chest problems, coughs, and colds etc offering immediate results. Eucalyptus, pine and lavender are very good.

Compresses: Add 5-6 drops of essential oil to a small bowl of warm water. Next place a piece of cotton cloth or lint on the surface of the water, allowing it to soak in the liquid for a few minutes, wring out and then apply to the part of the body needing treatment. Compresses are normally placed on the neck, forehead, arms or legs.

Dermal applications: Body oils and massage oils. Most essential oils cannot be used directly on the skin, but need to be diluted first in a quality cold vegetable oil or mystics and magic plain base cream.

Vapourising: Half fill the bowl of the vapouriser with water and add a few drops of essential oil to this. This is particularly suitable for room freshening as well as Aromatherapy purposes. You can also add a few drops to a pot-pourri or to the water in an atomiser, as alternative methods of room fragrancing.
